Robert Orchardson Paths beyond, 2008
Digital art installation in vinyl on four glass screens
2.7 x 1.6 m each

Robert Orchardson considers how we look beyond our immediate circumstances and how we might engage with that which seems unknown. This proved a helpful starting point from which to approach his commission for British Airways' new Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Robert was keen to reflect the sense of Heathrow as a busy meeting point; a hub travellers fly to and from every day. Robert has created a set of four glass screens and each work in the series incorporates a creative burst of lines that converge upon numerous different vanishing points, as though several different points of perspective were seen at once. As a result, Paths beyond does not conform to our conventional way of seeing the world from a single perspective, and instead give the impression of an unusual spatial experience. Paths beyond involves the work being produced as an adhesive vinyl film where parts of these are opaque, and other areas semi-transparent, while further parts remain entirely clear. This option utilises the transparent nature of the glass, allowing light through the screens and preserving the open nature of the lounge, while still affording a degree of privacy for travellers using the lounge. These four free-standing glass screens are part of the first of a changing programme of temporary specially commissioned art works, curated by Artwise, in the British Airways Club Galleries Lounge.
