Christopher Pearson Pegasus and the Winged Lion
from the Digital Relief Series, 2008
Animated trompe l'oeil stone carving
1.5 x 1.8 m

At first glance Pegasus and the Winged Lion appears to be a stone carving of the time honoured British Airways crest sitting in its traditional place at the entrance of a grand room above a fireplace. However, as one sits down to relax in front of the fire one is suddenly aware that the Winged Lion and its friend the Pegasus have suddenly come to life and are getting up to a series of antics whilst the stone brickwork morphs around them! Christopher Pearson has taken the crest and brought it to life using 3D animation. The featured characters of Pegasus and the Winged Lion, both integral to the classic crest, bring together Pearson's love of traditional imagery and contemporary technologies with the artist's typical genius of using humour with brilliant craftsmanship. Christopher Pearson is one of the new generation of artists who is pioneering the field of digital interfacing and motion graphics.
