ANdAZ Hotel

ANdAZ Hotel

The Brief: Wilsden Design approached Artwise to create site specific sculptures for the newly refurbished entrance lobby of the ANdAZ Hotel (previously known as the Great Eastern Hotel) designed by Conran. The hotel has a long-standing relationship with the contemporary arts, from artworks hanging in the hotel rooms and guest corridors, to organised art tours of the East End gallery and studio spaces.

The Artwise Solution: Curating and commissioning four very diverse artists to reflect the unique and creative focus of ANdAZ in the hotel's lobby. Commissioned artists include: David Nash, Matthew Chambers, Jack Milroy and Lolly Batty. Nash has created one of his signature Crack and Warp Columns which employs horizontal cutting at regular intervals throughout its height, articulating the artist's immense fascination with wood structures, ages and qualities. Chambers' three ceramic sculptures - beautifully formed from a single block - explore the architecture and design of the unique properties of the entrance lobby by playing with the space, light and colour. Milroy and Batty were each challenged to install a work in the existing large glass cabinets flanking the space outside of the main elevator doors. Milroy responded with a sophisticated construction of archival inkjet printed figures meticulously cutout using a surgical scalpel, appearing as a marvelous procession of flying mannequins; where as, Batty has compiled a collection of her geometric sculptures playing with the changing light of the distinct area. Together the four commissions compliment the ANdAZ Hotel's ethos and add to their dedication to create a 5-star personalised experience.
