Art & Sacred Places

Art & Sacred Places, 2002 - 2004

The Brief: To commission site-specific contemporary artworks for Art and Sacred Spaces, a non-denominational organisation supporting the interaction between art and spirituality. To create thoughtful installations which provoke debate at both a local and international level.

The Artwise Solution: As part of ASP's 2000 programme, Artwise was asked to curate a project at St Peter's, Brighton, one of the major churches in the south of England. The resulting installations by Dan Coombs and Duncan Whitley brought contemporary art techniques such as assemblage and sound art into the Church context to examine the notion of spirituality in today's society.

From 2002-2004 Artwise held Assistant-Director position of ASP, and was responsible for appointing a curatorial team that included Theresa Gleadowe, Gavin Wade and Tamsin Dillon.

In 2004 Artwise curated Angel, a dramatic work by Rose Finn-Kelcey that was visible 24 hours a day on the facade of St Paul's Church, east London. Angel is documented by an online catalogue, which includes stunning still and moving images of it in situ, responses from the public and essays about the work. Angel was the recipient of the ACE Trust Award for temporary commissions for Art in a Religious Context category.

With support from the Abbey Harris Mural Fund, Arts Council England, The Henry Moore Foundation, The Jerusalem Trust, The London Institute.
