Farnborough Cultural Quarter Feasibility Study

The Brief: To consult on the development of a historic site into a business park, and with curator David Thorp to conduct a feasibility study into commissioning ambitious new art for this site. Slough Estates was particularly keen to enhance the architectural heritage of the former Royal Aircraft Establishment site at Farnborough, which contains several Grade I and II* buildings, including Europe's largest wind tunnel.

The Artwise Solution: With curator David Thorp, Artwise conducted extensive research into the feasibility of creating a cultural quarter in the park's historic core. They brought together a think tank of experts from the national and regional cultural fields to gauge reactions to a proposed venue and locate gaps in the cultural landscape. This resulted in a symposium at the Royal College of Art chaired by Sir Christopher Frayling. Following an enquiry into various possible outcomes, the group proposed a high-standard, integrated live/work/retail and cultural environment, and the development of a much-needed centre of design for the region.
